Artist Johann Biktashev

Israeli artist and illustrator (born in 2007 in Moscow). His creative practice develops at the intersection of conceptual figurative art and book illustration.

For the past three years, Johann has worked primarily in a digital medium (Procreate, iPad). This transition from the classical canvas was forced, yet it became an important creative response to the external instability of the surrounding world.

Working digitally, the artist preserves the principles of traditional painting: attention to color, texture, the plasticity of form, and compositional dramaturgy. As a result, his works are perceived as painterly pieces.

Johann’s artistic method is marked by a wide thematic and genre range.

In his standalone works, he explores polar states of the world — from vivid, dynamic subjects to monumental existential reflections on the place of the human being in the universe.

A significant part of these works is devoted to the vulnerability of human life in the face of the indifferent infinity of the Universe.

Expressive images deliberately move the viewer out of the comfort zone, confronting them with the grand scale of reality.

An equally important direction of his work is book illustration, where complex philosophical ideas are transformed into sequential visual narratives.

To date, three illustration projects have been fully completed:

• “The Tale of the Golden Cockerel” by A. S. Pushkin;
• “Villa Consolation” by D. I. Rubina;
• “The Story of Quinkana” by A. R. Biktashev.

Regardless of genre, the human being remains at the center of Johann’s artistic interest — their inner life, fragility, and search for a place in the world.

Johann is actively involved in exhibitions in Israel, collaborates with the international community ArtNeuroVerse Biennale, and is the winner of an international art competition (2024).
